Welcome to Ethiopia. We are in for a real treat today. Some of the music we will hear today comes from a blending of seemingly incompatible but historically closely related cultures. Other music we will hear is played with an unmistakable Ethiopian influence.

We will have a long day here in Ethiopia with four different performers so let’s get started.

Beginning our performances is singer Ejigayehu Shibabaw, better known as Gigi:

Eske Meche

Shabate is our next group. It is actually an Israeli band but it is led by Ethiopian reedman Abate Bihurim. Shabate blends Ethiopian Jazz with African rhythms and a little Jewish Soul. They sing in both Amharic and Hebrew. Enjoy Shabate:

Our next artist is an arranger, vibraphonist, percussionist, and is considered to be the father of Ethio Jazz. Let’s welcome now Mulatu Astatke:

The Way to Nice

Our final group is Wudasse. Though the members are from Ethiopia, this group actually came together in the United States. Let’s bring Wudasse up now.

Endaba Gerima

Ete Mate
