Welcome to Azerbaijan. We are extremely fortunate today to have royalty in the house.

We have two musicians waiting to perform for you today; both are extremely fluent in expressing their culture through Jazz. Both are well known for their mastery of a style of music known as mugam, a complex, ancient style of music found in Central Asia, the Middle East and Turkey.

To open our concert today, please welcome saxophonist/composer Rain Alladin oglu Sultanov:

Baki Xatireleri

Trail of my Dream

City of Jazz

Footprints

Coming to the stage now is a lady known internationally as The Princess of Jazz. After recording the “Dance of Fire” album with her, guitarist Al DiMeola said, “Her music has much more meaning for me than just straight ahead Jazz because what I hear is her culture. I hear Azerbaijan.” Welcome, none other than singer/pianist/composer Aziza Mustafa Zadeh:

The Princess of Jazz (Sorry, I don’t read Azeri yet so I don’t know what the real title of this song is)

Welcome to Bulgaria. Today we visit with pianist Milcho Leviev. The list of musicians he has performed with is staggering.

In addition to the ‘concert’, on our schedule today is an interview which includes a performance of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, one of Leviev’s favorite pieces, plus a duet with the interviewer.

On a personal note, at a music convention I was privileged to have listened up close and personal to someone playing a Bösendorfer grand piano. I was quite impressed by its deep, reverberant sound. It was like being inside a concert hall. With a group of the caliber of Free Flight, it was a stroke of genius that Leviev plays a Bösendorfer on their self-titled album. Let’s welcome Mr. Milcho Leviev:

With Eastern Eye – an excerpt from “Bulgarian Boogie”

Concert in Roman Stadium in Plovdiv

Encounters 2

With Free Flight on The Tonight Show

Joe (To Joe Farrell)

Welcome to Russia. Russia is a huge country and there are many artists from which to chose. Therefore we will be staying a while longer so we can listen to all of the musicians that will be playing for you today.

You may have noticed that our cover photo for the Jazz Around the World tour is from right here in Russia; St. Petersburg to be exact. My time here was much too short but it certainly was refreshing to see that Jazz hall during my visit; a firm reminder that Jazz truly is an international language.

Starting things off today will be pianist Ivan Farmakovsky. Ivan, as a student, entered several international competitions, eventually winning a prize in 1997 at the Europe Jazz Contest in Belgium. He was discovered by saxman Igor Butman, whom we will hear from later. Let’s bring to the stage Ivan Farmakovsky:

Soul Inside Out

Autumn Waltz

The Way Home

Coming to the stage now is singer Sophie Milman. Sophie is a relative newcomer, having only released her first album in 2004. But it didn’t take long for her talents to be recognized. She won a Juno award in 2008. Welcome now, Sophie Milman:

La Vie En Rose

No More Blues

Next is guitarist/composer Roman Miroshnichenko. Roman is a frequent performer in Jazz festivals around the world and has collaborated and performed with many of the world’s best musicians. Let’s welcome Roman Miroshnichenko:

Summer Night in Gagra

With Daniel Kramer – A blues (no title provided)

With Charlie Bisharat, Mario Olivares, Dominique DiPiazza, and Over Serrano – “Unforgiven”

To close out our festival tonight, let’s bring to the stage tenor saxophonist Igor Butman. Many A-listers of the Jazz world have performed with Igor. His command of several different styles is very impressinve. If a poll was taken to find out who is Russia’s greatest Jazz musician, Igor would top the results. Please welcome, Mr. Igor Butman:

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Nostalgia

Some Skunk Funk

Welcome to Poland. Basia Trzetrzelewska will be singing for us today. Better known to the world by just her first name, Basia learned English while singing in a vocal group in her native Poland. That opened many doors for her. After teaming up with the group Matt Bianco and later former Matt Bianco keyboardist Danny White, she went on to become an international star. I think it all hit her when she performed at the former Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles: After her opening number, she received a thunderous ovation. She was moved to tears by the audience’s appreciation of her music. Her tears moved the audience to applaud even louder. Let’s welcome Basia:

An Olive Tree

Astrud

Third Time Lucky

Waters of March

Drunk on Love

With Spyro Gyra – “Springtime Laughter”
